After so much time sharing my art virtually it has been quite an experience to start to bring my art back out into the world in a physical way again. Despite understanding and following COVID safety protocols, I am out of practice at attending in-person art events. I have also gotten out of the practice of letting people know where they can see my art. This is me getting back in the swing of things.
If you are in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin between now and November 8th, please plan to stop in at the Miller Art Museum to view two of my watercolors included in the 46th Juried Annual. The Miller is a year-round art museum located in the heart of historic downtown Sturgeon Bay on Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, and is dedicated to fostering the creative life of the community. Helen del Guidice is the curator for the Miller Art Museum and this is the first year she has opened the exhibition to artists from the entire state. It’s a lovely exhibition so check it out if you can get there before it comes down on November 8th. The museum hours are 10-7 Mondays and 10-5 Tuesday-Saturday. It is closed on Sundays.
Another annual Wisconsin art exhibition I am delighted to be a part of is Watercolor Wisconsin 2021. The exhibition opens with a virtual reception and awards ceremony December 14th, 6:00-7:00 PM. The reception will include a brief presentation and awards ceremony. From December 15th, until April 23rd, 2022 the entire exhibition can be seen in person at the Racine Art Museum’s Charles Wustum Museum.
The Watercolor Wisconsin exhibition was started in 1966 to honor the depth and breadth of watercolor in the state of Wisconsin. I am a past recipient of a purchase award from this exhibition and am proud to have one of my paintings in the Racine Art Museum’s permanent collection. This year’s jurors were Sara Cox, Manager of Collections at the Elmhurst Art Museum in Illinois, and Carole Hennessy. President of the Illinois Watercolor Society.
For those of you escaping to northern Wisconsin this fall, you can find some of my works on display in the Marie Moore Gallery of the Three Lakes Center for the Arts . The gallery is in Three Lakes Wisconsin (near Rhinelander). It’s a lovely, recently renovated little gallery and art center in a beautiful place. Stop in if you are in that neighborhood.
While you are there swing by ArtStart, a wonderful art center in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary. ArtStart was started by a group of community-minded volunteers who came together to transform a historic Federal Building in downtown Rhinelander into a destination arts and cultural center. The City of Rhinelander voted to purchase the old Post Office building from the Federal Government for $1 and lease it to non-profit organization that is ArtStart, Inc. I have watched its development as a beautiful example of how. a community can successfully develop a creative place-making project that transforms a historical landmark into a destination arts and cultural center, with the goal of strengthening their community through arts education and cultural engagement.
More Art From A Few Of My Friends
As mentioned, I was delighted to again have my work included in the Watercolor Wisconsin 2021 exhibition. However, I was just as happy to hear that the wonderful artist Daniel M. Torres, (my step-son and collaborator in a number of creative ventures), was also invited to display one of his paintings. If you attend the December 14th virtual reception, you may also hear him being additionally recognized as one of the Watercolor Wisconsin 2021 exhibition awards recipients.
As long as I am mentioning creative family members with artworks on display in the state, I a, delighted to mention that my cousin and fellow watercolorist, Bob Hodgson will have his watercolors on display at the Bloom Bake Shop, (1851 Monroe Street) from November 3-December 1, 2021. Stop in and check out his wonderful paintings if you are in Madison.
Bob Hodgson’s exhibition will be a part of the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art Gallery Night, November 12, 5-9. During Gallery Night, dozens of venues open their doors to invite the public in to see and shop for original artwork. MMOCA Gallery Night offers the public opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of exhibitions, opening receptions, special events, and demonstrations at venues throughout the city. You can see all the other participants here. Plan to follow COVID-19 protocols and check out the art!
Have fun viewing art in Wisconsin!
