For years I have been obsessed with flowers growing in the area I live and in places I visit. The whole practice of painting from observation can be an almost meditative experience as you learn how each bloom is shaped and how each pedal and leaf connects to the larger whole.

When I started painting the flower field paintings I thought I was just going to do a couple of watercolor sketches to warm up for the series of still lives I had planned for an upcoming exhibition. Instead I spent the summer wallowing in careful observation of flowers and the abundance of the land. This work became the most important work I could do and I’m still at it.
