I love nothing better than working in my art studio alone. I hunger for it. I work hard to protect my art time from other obligations. I can spend endless hours painting, creating, and seeking that place of flow that is timeless and thrilling. It is my favorite thing to do right up until it becomes lonely, oppressive, and isolating.

Most artists wrestle with being asked to donate artwork to multiple charity and silent auctions for organizations usually offering in exchange business-related results such as exposure, recognition, and a tax deduction. However the most an artist is likely to receive is a warm feeling for donating to a good cause. So, when do art donations make sense for the artist?

My watercolor painting, Bluebirds Love Sumac, was painted in celebration of the fall sumac and the restoration of bluebird habitat. I’m delighted the painting was chosen for the cover of the 2011 Dane County Cultural Commission Calendar.

There is no doubt about it, building an art career is a lot of work. It has been quite an interesting and productive period of time for me recently as I work to balance my multiple interests: art making, day job, teaching, and planning and promotions for future and current projects.

Careful looking inspires me. Painting has given me permission to spend a long time looking carefully at how a flower or leaf is constructed. The same is true when I decide to consider a social or cultural issue.
